Voyage

1

On May 1st 1607, Henry Hudson started to sail from England on the Hopewell with eleven crewmembers and his son. Hudson traveled closer to the North Pole than any other explorer. Henry Hudson was looking for a Northwest passage to the Orient, and discovered that there was no way through the North Pole.

Voyage

2

On April 22, 1608, He set sail on the Hopewell again and found that as he rounded the Northern  tip of Norway. The sun shone 24 hours a day during the Arctic Summer. He still never found a  Northwest Passage to the Orient.

Voyage

In 1609, Hudson moved to holland and sailed for the Dutch East India Company. The Dutch provided him with a ship called the Half Moon, and a crew. He had a total of 18 crewmen because he chose some Englishmen and Dutch. The Half Moon was a 60 ft. long and had a flat bottom. In April they set sail from Amsterdam and headed North. The weather was cold and got even colder. The weather worsened and the crew started to threaten to do mutiny. He turned the ship around and headed south. He ended up off the coast of present day Maine, and sighted the area known as Cape Cod. Hudson headed further south and sailed to the Chesapeake Bay. In September, 1609, the ship dropped anchor in the harbor of a great river known as the Hudson. The crew traded with the indians and explored the length of the river. Eventually the Dutch founded New Amsterdam or present-day New York.

Voyage

On April 17, 1610, Henry Hudson set sail once more from England and headed Northwest. The ship Discovery made its way through the icy Hudson Strait. In August, he sighted a huge body of water. He mistakenly thought that the body of water was the Pacific Ocean. That large body of water was later named the Hudson Bay.

Interesting facts:

Henry Hudson was possibly the grandson of a London elderman who helped found the trading organization, The Muscovy Company.

Was commisioned by the Muscovy Company in 1607

Henry Hudson was the first European to explore the Hudson River throughout its navigable length and leave behind a detailed description of his voyage
